Het Anker Brewery is a Flemish brewery in Mechelen founded in 1471 which over here was during the reign of Edward IV, at which time England had particularly strong trading and cultural links with Belgium. The brewery was renamed Het Anker ("The Anchor") in 1901 and began producing "Emperor beer" after World War II. renamed "Gouden Carolus" after Charles V in the 1960s. Crowned World's Best Dark Ale at the 2012 World Beer Awards, Gouden Carolus Classic pours deep red and viscous with sweet notes of raisin, toffee and chocolate; a must try for those who like their beer powerful and warming. Rich and complex, like many dark beers it will improve with age. Why not buy one to enjoy now and one to pop in the cellar? Gouden Carolus Classic won a Gold Medal at the World Beer Awards 2015 in the category Belgium - Belgian Style Strong.
